The Dr. Sun Student Science Award in Memory of Dr. Tung-Tien Henry Sun (February 20, 1947 - May 26, 2022). Dr. Sun was the co-founder and the first President (1989-1991) of the Westchester Association of Chinese Americans (WACA). He was a beloved and extraordinary Professor of Cell Biology, Dermatology, Pharmacology, and Urology, at NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Sun's lab at NYU has helped numerous young scientific leaders stand out in curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and boldness in scientific research. The Dr. Sun Student Science Award is a continuation of his passion and devotion to supporting future generations of young scientists.
The 2025-2026 Dr. Sun Student Science Award Is Now Accepting Applications
The 2025–2026 WACA Science Award is designed to recognize an outstanding high school student in the field of science from Westchester County, New York.
Students entering grades 10, 11, or 12 as of September 2025 are eligible to apply.
Winners will be honored at the WACA Chinese New Year Celebration in February 2026:
First Prize: $1,500 and a Certificate of Distinction
Second Prize: $600 and a Certificate of Distinction
Third Prize: $400 and a Certificate of Distinction
Being nominated is a significant honor.
Each eligible nominee will receive an official recognition letter from the President of the Westchester Association of Chinese Americans (WACA).
WACA will only consider completed applications received before midnight on October 1, 2025. Each submission must include:
1. Nomination Letter
A science teacher or mentor should provide a letter highlighting:
The student’s scientific achievements and contributions
Any other relevant information to assist the review committee
The nomination letter should be emailed directly to WACA at nywaca@gmail.com no later than October 1, 2025.
2. Application Package
Each nominated student must submit the following materials by October 1, 2025, to nywaca@gmail.com:
Completed and signed WACA Science Award Application Form
A copy of the student’s high school transcript
A full research report detailing the scientific work or project
Evaluation Process:
Applications will first be screened for eligibility, including adherence to deadlines and qualification criteria.
The Award Committee will then review and score eligible applications based on the merit of scientific achievement, originality, and impact.
Awardees will be notified by November 1, 2025.
