"I am beyond honored to have been selected as the 1st place winner for this award. I give my thanks to my mother, who introduced me to this wonderful association, Principal Dang Bing, for supporting me as a nominee for this award, and of course to WACA, for not only selecting me for this award but also for their work in promoting Chinese culture and heritage. I have spent much of my high school career trying to build community in New Rochelle, whether that was by interviewing strangers for Humans of New Rochelle, taking free senior photographs for my high school, offering free Zoom art lessons, or volunteering as a piano tutor at Songcatchers. Over the years I have grown to love the New Rochelle community with all my heart, and I hope to continue serving it in the years to come. At the same time, however, it means a lot to find community in a place beyond the borders of a city designated to me by location of birth, and so I greatly appreciate the opportunity WACA has given me to find my place in the Chinese American community. I take this award as motivation to seek community everywhere I go. "
"I am extremely honored to receive such an important student award from WACA. I am grateful for the recognition for my work during this unprecedented year. It truly inspires me to continue the community service in my next chapter of student life. Thank you all so very much! "
"I’m so glad to hear these news ...... I feel grateful to have this opportunity and your encouragement means a lot to me. Please bring my thanks to the WACA OSLCS Award Committee. "
I am so honored to have been selected for this award. First, I’d like to thank my parents and grandparents for instilling in me a love of my heritage and of service. I’d also like to thank WACA for their work in the Chinese American community; as a first generation American, I feel that it’s so important to have groups that celebrate our heritage. My last thanks goes to the past recipients of this award. Many of them have been role models and mentors to me in my high school journey, and I hope to continue their legacy of leadership and service. I want my participation in technical theatre and STEM programs, fields where women are critically underrepresented, to show girls that we can succeed against the odds. Service has meant a lot to me throughout high school, but I didn’t grasp its true significance until I shadowed doctors in China. They saw up to 100 patients every day, but still faced each new case with patience, grace, and the highest standard of care. They inspired me to see service as more than an obligation or a responsibility, but the true love of helping and learning from others. I hope to continue living up to that standard, no matter where I go in life.
I would like to thank WACA for this amazing opportunity and my parents and teachers for all their support throughout the years. Throughout my life I've always felt a drive to learn new things and a curiosity to understand how things work. In high school, I conduced research using sensors on affordable smartphones to develop navigation and text recognition aids for the blind and visually impaired. Outside of academics, I am an avid cellist, and have played in the New York Youth Symphony since 2017 and served as principal cellist in the New York All State Symphonic Orchestra. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, biking, and playing tennis with my friends.
I am so honored to receive the WACA 2019-2020 Outstanding Student Leadership and Community Service Award. There are many exceptional talented students in our area who have also demonstrated impressive leadership and a tremendous amount of contribution to our communities. I feel very lucky to be chosen by the award committee, since I know many others would be equally or more qualified than me. I would take this as a great encouragement and try my best to continue giving back to my community. Thanks very much to WACA organizers for sponsoring this award.
